Author Spotlight- Kaje Harper

Please help me welcome Kaje Harper to the author spotlight stage! CJ is from Minneapolis, MN.

Describe your books/your writing for the readers.

Real men, real lives, real love, whether the guys are cops, teachers, sorcerers, or werewolves

What is something that makes you unique (personally or within your writing)?

My goal is to create main characters you feel you could meet in your local coffee shop and be friends with, at least when they weren’t battling demons.

Tell us about your writing process. Where do your ideas come from? Do you plan/plot or totally wing it?

I’m a discovery writer (a pantser by a prettier name) – so much so that I have gotten 3/4 of the way through a mystery I was writing before I knew who the killer was. I start with a voice, a scene, put fingers to keys and go (and hope no vampires randomly show up in what I thought was a contemporary.)

What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?

I read “The Persian Boy” and “The Front Runner” when I was 14, and the heart-wrenching unfairness of those tragic endings to gay love stories set me on a lifelong course of writing HEAs for LGBTQ main characters.

What is your favorite childhood book?

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

What is one of the best feelings in the world?

When someone tells me that a book of mine helped them get through a tough moment in their life.

If animals could talk, which would be the rudest?

Cats – because manners are for peasants, not royalty.

What’s a sound you absolutely love?

A cat purring beside my head on a pillow.

Favorite snack while writing?

Pretzel mix; I love chocolate but my keyboard doesn’t

Favorite drink when writing?

Tea, hot (but not Earl Grey)

Favorite scent?

Lily of the Valley – my mom’s perfume for 58 years of my life

If someone is new to your writing, which book would you suggest they start with?

Into Deep Waters – free novel, 2 young men in WWII trying to build a life to last.
